Robert De Niro Currently In Talks With Warner Brothers To Join Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Origin Movie

It looks like Robert De Niro's already in talks to sign on to Warner Brother's Joker origin movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the veteran Academy Award-winning actor is currently in negotiations with Warner Brothers to join the gritty Joker movie that it's making outside of the reach of its burgeoning DC Extended Universe.

Though the studio hasn't released any information on the role that De Niro might play if the deal pushes through, Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider recently told Collider that the Godfather star might not actually be playing some canon character taken from DC's comics. Instead, Sneider hazards a guess and says that De Niro might be in talks to play "a local TV host or something like that, who's maybe broadcasting about the Joker."

Though Sneider says that he can't really be sure what role De Niro is taking on, he's fairly certain that one of the characters that's playing a big role in the Joker origin is Thomas Wayne, Bruce's father. Directed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips, Joker has been described as a dark and gritty character study of Gotham's Clown Prince Of Crime. The standalone movie is supposed to be set in Gotham during the early 1980s, years before Batman's inception.

Right now Warner Bros. has only cast Phoenix and Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz in the upcoming Joker origin movie. We'll have to wait and see whether the studio's deal pushes through and De Niro gets nabbed for the project.

Joker hits cinemas October 4, 2019.
