Ridley Scott Praises Joaquin Phoenix Performance in Joker

Ridley Scott has already made it clear that he isn't a fan of superhero movies. However, there is one comic book film that he was impressed with. Scott admitted that he was blown away by Joker and he has nothing but praise for Joaquin Phoenix's performance in the DC flick.

It was previously reported that Scott has strong feelings about superhero movies. The Alien director stated that films about superheroes are "f-cking boring as sh-t." Scott claimed that the "scripts are not any f-cking good" and believes that the stories should be much better than what has been released in the past few years.

He might not like comic book movies but Scott clearly loved what Joaquin Phoenix did in Joker. While talking to Deadline about casting the Gladiator star as Napoleon Bonaparte in Kitbag, Scott shared what he thought about Phoenix's performance in the Todd Phillips film.

"I think, you know, Joaquin can do anything. So, when he then does something like Joker, there are moments in the Joker that I’ve never seen before. There are reactions in the Joker which are silly. You can’t just say they’re not evil. They’re coming from a damaged soul," Scott said.

It's easy to understand why Scott wants to continue working with Phoenix. The Joker star turned in a jaw-dropping performance in Gladiator and Scott clearly wants to bring in the best talents for his own projects. With that in mind, we're looking forward to seeing Phoenix as Napoleon in Kitbag soon.

Phoenix is expected to return in Joker 2 but it is still unclear when the sequel will start filming. In the meantime, he will play the historical military leader in Kitbag, which is already expected to begin production in January next year.

Scott's new film House of Gucci will hit theaters on November 24, 2021.
