It seems like every filmmaker is out to say something bad about comic book films. The latest director to diss superhero movies is Ridley Scott, who has some harsh words to share about the trend. The Alien director stated that the popular franchises are "f-cking boring as sh-t!" and that the "scripts are not any f-cking good."
Scott is currently promoting his latest project House of Gucci but he still found time to share his thoughts about popular superhero movies that have turned into the current trend. Speaking to Deadline, the Last Duel director pointed out that "the best films are driven by the characters" before suddenly dissing "superheroes", stating that "they’re f-cking boring as sh-t."
"Their scripts are not any fucking good. I think I’ve done three great scripted superhero movies," Scott said, citing Alien, Gladiator, and Blade Runner. Insisting that these projects were about films about superheroes, he asked, "Why don’t the superhero movies have better stories?"
"They’re mostly saved by special effects, and that’s becoming boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you’ve got the money," Scott concluded.
This was certainly an unexpected diss considering that Scott was talking about Napoleon Bonaparte and the battle scene in Sergei Bondarchuk's 1970 film Waterloo just moments before it. Although he is right about superhero movies featuring a lot of action sequences with special effects, fans of the Marvel and DC comic book films are very likely to argue with Scott.
Scott is hardly the first filmmaker to throw shade at comic book movies. We all know about Martin Scorsese's previous rant about superhero films and at this point, we're no longer surprised that directors feel so strongly about these big-budget blockbusters. Still, these are the movies that people love watching and it's highly unlikely that the trend will die down soon.
Scott's new film House of Gucci will be released on November 24, 2021. His next project Kitbag will begin production in January next year.
