Rian Johnson Working Together With GOT Showrunners To Build Future Of Star Wars Franchise

Rian Johnson might have his own Star Wars trilogy outside the series of films that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are developing, however, it seems like the three are already working closely together, plotting the course of the future of the Star Wars franchise.

Though she doesn't give away too many details about Johnson, Benioff, and Weiss' upcoming Star Wars projects, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy did provide a solid update about the next slate of Star Wars films in an interview with Entertainment Weekly during the 2019 Star Wars Celebration in Chicago last weekend.

According to the Star Wars producer, Benioff and Weiss are currently collaborating with Johnson for the future of the franchise.

"As they finish Game of Thrones, they're going to segue into Star Wars. They're working very closely with Rian," Kennedy told the entertainment news outlet.

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that Johnson and the Game of Thrones showrunner's different Star Wars trilogies would end up being interlinked. Perhaps the directors are just having conversations seeing where they're all headed to, making sure there aren't any obvious similarities between projects. Or the three could be bouncing ideas off of each other.

Right now there aren't too many details about the director's upcoming projects, but word has it that Johnson's trilogy is going to feature something entirely new. Meanwhile, rumor says that Benioff and Weiss are working on a Knights of the Old Republic film. As with any rumor though, we advise fans to take these with a grain of salt – we'll just have to wait for word from Lucasfilm what exactly Johnson, Benioff, and Weiss are working on.

Lucasfilm's newest Star Wars movie, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
