Rian Johnson Wants Future Star Wars Films To Explore Beyond What We’ve Already Seen

Sure, Star Wars: The Last Jedi was nothing short of a commercial and critical success, however the film also ended up being a divisive entry in the Star Wars franchise with a vocal minority complaining about how the film tried to subvert fan expectations and how worse of all, turn the benevolent Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) into a jaded old hermit.

Despite these many complaints against the film, The Last Jedi was also celebrated for taking the Star Wars franchise to new directions, and now it looks like director Rian Johnson is ready to see Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss do the same in their films.

Speaking in an interview with MTV during the 2019 CinemaCon this week, Johnson was asked about what he's been feeling about the Game of Thrones duo's upcoming Star Wars film series.

"I'm also psyched about the things they are going to explore beyond what we've seen already," Johnson said. "To me, that's kind of the most exciting stuff is pushing the limits of seeing stuff we haven't seen before in Star Wars."

During the interview, Johnson was also asked about what he felt about Episode IX and whether he'd be bothered if Episode IX co-writer and director J.J. Abrams would retcon the revelation that Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parents were actually nobodies (another major point of contention in the film).

"Like I said, man, I want to let go of all my expectations. I want to sit back. I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff I wasn't expecting him to do and just go along for the ride," the director responded.

What do you hope to see in Episode IX? Are you looking for a retcon too?

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
