News had come out recently that Regal Entertainment was siding with AMC when it came to their boycott of Universal Studios films, but it looks like Regal has come out to clarify their statement.
In a post from their official Twitter account, Regal confirms that they won't be boycotting any films, but they will definitely only play movies "that respect the theatrical window". Here's the post:
While it's not outright boycotting any studio, the threat is apparent when it comes to Regal only supporting films that "respect the window." Then the main controversy with Universal had started when they seemingly announced that they would be releasing films on VOD at the same time as they come out in theaters, and this is what led AMC to do their boycott.
If anything, Universal is making this out to be some kind of misunderstanding. After the AMC statement came out, Universal had said:
"We absolutely believe in the theatrical experience and have made no statement to the contrary. As we stated earlier, going forward, we expect to release future films directly to theatres, as well as on PVOD when that distribution outlet makes sense. We look forward to having additional private conversations with our exhibition partners but are disappointed by this seemingly coordinated attempt from AMC and NATO to confuse our position and our actions."
With the rise of streaming services, it was already being speculated that theaters were having a harder time bringing in an audience. Remove the exclusivity of their theatrical releases, and they are sure to lose even more members of the movie-going audience.
Either way, the box office is clearly in a weird state due to the pandemic, and everyone is hoping that we could get back to the way things were soon.
