Red XIII Will Not be Playable in Final Fantasy VII Remake

When Square Enix revealed Red XIII for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, fans were really happy to see the character in such high-definition, along with his refined voice. The character will be recruited to the party near the end of this remake since we're only going to see this game through Midgar. Logically, this would mean that Red XIII would only be playable for a small portion of the game, just like Vegito in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

However, during an interview with VG24/7, one of the developers from Square Enix confirmed that Red XIII would not be playable during the game. They felt that it would have been bittersweet to play as him for such a short amount of time so he will just be a guest party member. At the least, he will still be able to attack enemies and we can presumably command him to use certain abilities.

Here's what Final Fantasy VII Remake co-director Naoki Hamaguchi had to say about Red XIII not being playable:

"We felt the point at which Red XIII joins the party in the story is very late on so we thought okay, if we're gonna have him as a full character and try and get the player to enjoy his character development arc and growth as a character through that, it's not really enough time to do that. We thought that the best way to have him involved was as a guest character. Normally throughout the game you'll be playing as a three-man party, but you will have him as a guest character that fights alongside you during the the last part of the story."

Admittedly, it's a disappointing move, simply because he's such a fan-favorite character but we can't blame them for this. Hopefully, the next few games will be bigger and better, and they will definitely make Red XIII playable, along with Yuffie, Vincent Valentine, and Cait Sith. With a new generation of consoles coming, let's hope that the sequels won't take too long to make.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be coming to PS4 on April 10. The game's demo is now available for download.
