Queen Elizabeth is helping her heir and son, Prince Charles, prepare for his reign. However, according to a royal biographer, the future of the monarchy is uncertain, with the Prince of Wales already approaching his 80s.

Queen Elizabeth Laying The Groundwork For Prince Charles' Reign

The Queen and the heirs, Prince Charles, and Prince William, are working closely for the future of the monarchy. Even if the Duke of Cambridge is more popular than his dad, the Prince of Wales, there is no way that he will succeed the throne before him.

The 96-year-old monarch is well-loved, and she wants the public to extend their support to her son, Prince Charles, who will lead the monarchy after her.

"One of the things she is doing, it would appear at the moment, it's laying the groundwork for the future, the next reign," the Queen: 70 Chapters in the Life of Elizabeth II author told Express. "The Queen is supremely popular but when she goes you don't want it all to come crashing down, you don't want a vacuum where people don't know what's going to happen and then Charles comes along as an elderly man."

Lloyd added that the Queen's work in helping establish Prince Charles is very important because it's not the "PR dream" to have one start his reign in his advanced years.

"It's not the PR dream to have somebody approaching 80s who has lost the bloom of youth and, while he seems very healthy now, may himself be at the age where you start having issues," he said.

Will Queen Elizabeth Abdicate Or Break Another Record?

Queen Elizabeth beat her great-grandmother in 2015, Queen Victoria, who remained on the throne for 63 years and 216 days, as she celebrated her 70 years on the throne earlier this month. The Queen's fans could beat Louis XIV of France in a two-year time. The Sun King reigned for 72 days and 110 days.

"I think everybody wants the Queen to break the records, the next record is 2024, when she will beat King Louis XIV of France as the longest-reigning monarch on record," Lloyd added. "It's quite a fabulous thing, really."

She continued, "Although she herself is not really bothered about records, she wasn't very keen to do anything when she beat Queen Victoria as the longest-reigning British monarch."

However, there are rumors that she will abdicate after the Platinum Jubilee. Clive Irving, the founding editor of The Sunday Times' Insight, said the "sane thing" for Her Majesty to do after she skipped several engagements in the past months is to "abdicate" or use the Regency Act, which for him is "the first step towards abdication."

Duncan Larcombe, a former royal editor of The Sun, echoed the same opinion. Larcombe said if the Queen would continue to miss her duties, then she should step down. He added that the royal family could remove the Queen, but there should be "consent."
