It has been ten years since the release of the first Psycho-Pass TV anime season, and now, the new movie Psycho-Pass Providence was announced.

The new movie was announced as part of the series’ 10th-anniversary event; it is an upcoming anime movie that is directed by Naoyoshi Shiotani.

While there was no trailer released alongside the announcement, the key visual for the movie was released.

The key visual is interesting as it features the cast from the first two seasons and the first movie, including Akane Tsunemori, Shinya Kogami, Nobuchika Ginoza, Yayoi Kunizuka, Mika Shimotsuki, and others.

While the key visual was not accompanied by other info about the movie’s story, it’s been theorized by fans that the film’s story will take place prior to the events of Psycho-Pass 3.

In case you need a refresher, Psycho-Pass 3 featured a new cast of characters and no longer featured Akane as the main protagonist. As the visual implies her return, fans online are happy with Akane being back as the main character.

Aside from the upcoming movie, the franchise’s 10th anniversary will also be celebrated with a series of events, including a collab café with Noitamina Shop & Cafe Theater, as well as an online exhibition that will showcase special illustrations from the series.

Psycho-Pass began as an original TV anime by Production IG and was written by Gen Urobuchi (the writer of Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero) and released in October 2012.

Since then, the series expanded into a media franchise with two more TV anime seasons, movies, written novels, and a visual novel, among other projects.

The series is a dystopian cyberpunk thriller that’s set in a future version of Japan that’s governed by the Sibyl System. This system measures citizens’ brains to keep track of their mental state or their “psycho-pass.”

In this psycho-pass is the “Crime Coefficient,” a number that indicates their likelihood to commit a crime. If a citizen’s crime coefficient reaches 100, they are apprehended by authorities.

For those who reach 120, they are automatically tagged for elimination by Enforcers that are equipped with Dominators.

Psycho-Pass Providence Release Date

Psycho-Pass Providence is currently in the works by Production IG. Though right now, there is no specific release date or release window yet for the upcoming movie.

It’s likely that more info will be revealed, possibly around October 12 as that day is the official 10th anniversary of the series.
