Princess Bride Author William Goldman Dies At 87

It's a truly sad week for the world of fantasy. William Goldman, the author of The Princess Bride and Marathon Man, has passed away on Friday, November 16 at the age of 87.

According to Goldman's daughter Jenny, the cause of death was complications from colon cancer and pneumonia. Goldman is survived by his two daughters Jenny and Susanna from his marriage to Ilene Goldman (via Variety).

Although he is best known for writing the novel and screenplay for The Princess Bride, Goldman had countless contributions to film and literature. He wrote the screenplay for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which earned him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Goldman was also worked on the film adaptation of Stephen King's book Misery.

He had a gift for fixing screenplays which gave him the title "script doctor." Goldman did uncredited work on the Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy Twins, Tom Cruise's A Few Good Men, the drama Indecent Proposal, the action-comedy The Last Action Hero, and the adaptation of Michael Palmer's Extreme Measures.

Goldman had previously teased on a Princess Bride sequel called Buttercup's Baby. However, the author stated that he was "having trouble getting published because of legal difficulties with S. Morgenstern's estate". He later admitted that he was struggling to find ideas for the new book. Goldman confessed he wants to work on the novel but needs to find the right inspiration.

His most recent work was the screenplay for the film based on his novel Heat. The movie, which was titled Wild Card, starred Jason Statham, Milo Ventimiglia, Hope Davis, and Stanley Tucci. It was released in 2015.
