Prince Harry announced his memoir last year, and it will be out early next year. On Thursday, Penguin Random House revealed the title of the anticipated book.

Prince Harry Using The Victim Card In Giving Memoir The Title Spare?

The publisher of Prince Harry's memoir announced that his book titled Spare will be out on Jan. 10, 2023. The title raised several eyebrows because many felt that he used it to portray himself as a victim.

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe, a royal editor for The Sun for 10 years, said the term "spare" is a derogatory term in the royal fold. He also speculated that Prince Harry used the victim card in the book.

"The spare to the heir is someone who is not as important and as worthy as their older sibling," Larcombe told Fox News Digital. "And that's certainly something that hasn't been a very easy role historically for Prince Harry but also Prince Andrew, Charles's brother, and of course, Princess Margaret, the queen's sister. So it kind of looks very clearly that Harry's intent on taking a kind of victim position, because he's giving the [title] a derogatory term, and presumably what will follow is a book about how hard it was being born in his brother's shadow."

He added that Prince Harry wanted to lead the charge of publicity for it. He wasn't sure if Markle influenced him. However, what he found interesting to learn is if the tone of Prince Harry's memoir is a continuation of their general attacks on the institution.

What's The Meaning Of The Title Of Prince Harry's Memoir Spare?

The word "spare," which Prince Harry used as a title for his memoir, was from "the heir and the spare" adage. It was referring to Prince William and Prince Harry's different destinies and roles in the monarchy since birth.

Prince William is the future king. When they were kids, Prince Harry, as the younger sibling of the "heir," was referred to as the "spare."

Even Princess Diana reportedly called her youngest son "the spare," according to royal expert Shannon Felton Spence. She added that based on the title, the book would contain Prince Harry's personal battle as he tries to find his path in an institution set up only for his older brother.

Princess Diana also acknowledged Prince Harry's role as a spare, according to her biographer Andrew Morton.

"She said to me more than once that Harry was William's backup, his wingman," Morton told People. "She said she'd had two boys for a reason — the younger one was there to help the older one. She would be grievously hurt to see how it's turned out between them."
