During Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey two years ago, they suggested that one member of the royal family had concerns about Archie’s skin color. The couple did not use the terms racist or racism, but those who watched the interview connected two and two together.
“They were concerned that if he were too brown, that would be a problem. Are you saying that?” Winfrey asked Markle (via Cheat Sheet).
“If that’s the assumption you’re making, I think that feels like a pretty safe one, which was really hard to understand, right?” Markle replied.

Prince Harry Denies Calling The Royal Family Racist, Says Racism Is Different From Unconscious Bias
But during a recent interview, Prince Harry denied ever accusing the royal family of racism. Instead, he stressed that there’s a difference between racism and unconscious bias.
While speaking with Tom Brady for ITV, Prince Harry asked the interviewer if his wife ever used the word racist during her conversation with Winfrey.
“She said there were troubling comments about Archie’s skin color,” Bradby replied (via Town & Country).
“There was—there was concern about his skin color… I wouldn’t, not having lived within that family. The difference between racism and unconscious bias,” Prince Harry explained.
Royal Family Should Consider Making Peace With Prince Harry, Royal Correspondent Claims
According to reports, the incident where one member of the royal family expressed their concerns about Archie’s skin color wasn’t included in Spare. And former royal correspondent Peter Hunt said that the fact that Prince Harry didn’t include this story in his memoir paves the way for him and the royal family to reconcile.
“Now is the time for it, ironically. If they really want to seize the initiative, if they really want to shift the dial, they’ve got to somehow rise above it. It’s going to be incredibly difficult for them. Not to mention it will be something of a gamble. The risk, he told the publication, is that the royal family could their air of mystery because of Harry’s willingness to share publicly. It’s harder to have that mystery when we know they fight and call each other names,” he told The New York Times.
Following Prince Harry and Markle’s interview with Winfrey, a reporter asked Prince William to comment on the couple’s alleged racism claims. And in a rare and shocking move, the Prince of Wales defended the royal family by saying that they are not racist.
Typically, members of the royal family do not respond to the controversy. In fact, when Prince William was asked to comment on Prince Harry’s memoir, he refused to say a word.
