Prince Charles has been a king-in-waiting for the past couple of decades. But it’s only a matter of time before he finally ascends the throne. Even though Queen Elizabeth vowed to never abdicate, the fact that she’s already 96 years old means she doesn’t have much time to continue fulfilling her duties as the monarch.

In fact, Queen Elizabeth has been passing on some of her royal duties and engagements to Prince Charles. This week, the Prince of Wales took Her Majesty’s place at the Opening of Parliament. He also gave his speech for the first time ever at an important gathering.

Prior to this, Prince Charles has also been taking over some of his mother’s royal engagements. After all, the monarch’s health hasn’t been great. And she now has mobility issues.

Prince Charles Reportedly Plans To Have A Slimmed-Down Monarchy

The public can expect to see a slimmed-down monarchy when Prince Charles ascends the throne. Royal expert Jonathan Sacerdoti previously told Us Weekly that Prince Charles is expected to make some changes to the British monarchy when he becomes king.

“It’s always been rumored that he wants to slim down the working royals at the core of the family. Prince Charles has always been a hard-working royal and Prince William, too. But the more they get to do now, the more the baton is being handed over. They’re getting used to some of those roles for when they themselves are monarch,” he said.

Prince Charles Would Have Fewer Royals To Rely On When He’s King

Now, Express is claiming that having a slimmed-down monarchy may have some repercussions for Prince Charles and the royal family. After all, this means that Prince William and Prince Harry will have fewer royals to rely on.

Even before he reigns supreme, three key members of the royal family have already been removed from The Firm. Prince Andrew, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle have all been dubbed as disgraced royals because they were either involved in a scandal or have decided to quit their royal duties.

In March, a source told The Telegraph that Prince Charles would also have a difficult time working out how many royals are needed at a particular engagement because he doesn’t have that many options.

“The question is whether you start off by deciding how many patronages and engagements there should be, and then work out how many people are needed to achieve them, or whether you decide how many people there should be, which will dictate how many engagements and patronages they can take on,” the source said.

As of writing, the only senior working royals helping Queen Elizabeth out are Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Edward, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Princess Anne.

When Prince Charles ascends the throne, Camilla and Princess Anne would also be much older. And even if royal fans have been seeing more of Prince George and Princess Charlotte in public, they are still too young to represent the royal family.

Prince Charles And Prince William Plan To Make Changes To The British Monarchy

Other than Prince Charles’ alleged plans to have a slimmed-down monarchy, some royal experts are already speculating on what changes would be made when Prince William ascends the throne.

While speaking with Express, royal commentator Charlie Lankston said that the British monarchy would be more modern and less stuffy when the time comes.

“They are making small but very important changes, opening up the monarchy to a more modern point of view, not perhaps in a way [that] is noticeable every single day. But bit by bit they have helped the monarchy to evolve, embrace new traditions, and maintain the important heritage of the past while saying a few of the things that we used to do are seen to be very stuffy. They are very stuffy - here are ways we can maintain the tradition behind these things without making it appear as though we’re completely ignorant to what the rest of the world is doing and how they’re living,” he said.
