Possible Plot Leak for Shang-Chi Kind of Sounds Like a Mortal Kombat Ripoff

Marvel is set to release Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings next year, but so far, we don't know that much about the main story, but Fandomwire has allegedly gotten the main premise of the film—and it sounds an awful lot like Mortal Kombat.

This is the basic plot breakdown from Fandomwire:

Shang-Chi has a special power in this film, and because of it, he was raised in an orphanage for kids that are trained to fight. This special orphanage is run by The Mandarin. Shang-Chi eventually escapes the school/prison and begins living on the run, trying to stay out the Mandarin's clutches his entire life.

The Mandarin does eventually find the grown-up Shang-Chi again, and offers him a chance. The Mandarin promises Shang-Chi money and power, along with a promise that he'll finally stop chasing him if he will fight in an epic and magical tournament that every kid in the orphanage has been training for their entire lives. Whoever wins this tournament gets the legendary 10 Rings, which grants even more power, which clearly The Mandarin wants. However, The Mandarin is currently too old to fight so he enlists Shang-Chi.

Ancient tournament? Hero being coerced by a mystical old man to fight and win the prize? That's the plot of Mortal Kombat, with Liu Kang being replaced by Shang-Chi and Shang Tsung taking the place of the Mandarin.

Even Awkwafina's role, who is said to be the daughter of the Mandarin, sounds a lot like Kitana; in MK Kitana was the daughter of the villain Shao Khan and she also becomes Liu Kang's love interest. I won't be surprised if NetherRealm started suing Marvel Studios for something.

If anything, it's all just a rumor for now, but I'm actually all-up for this Marvel meets Mortal Kombat mash-up. It's rumored that the tournament will include fighters from "all corners of the MCU" and that we would be meeting comic book characters that FW doesn't want to spoil. I never really expected that, but if we get to watch Shang-Chi take on Beta Ray Bill, I'm sure fans would have their minds blown.

We don't know if any of this info is true, but hopefully Marvel gives us a big reveal before the year ends.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to come out on May 7, 2021.
