After sharing new details about the show last month, the Pokemon live-action series finally got its first proper trailer that gives fans a better idea of what to expect in this unique adaptation.

Officially titled Pocket ni Boken wo Tsumekonde (Fill Your Pocket with Adventure), this upcoming live-action show will air in Japan in two weeks.

There have been many live-action anime adaptations, but this one is a bit different as it’s not a straightforward retelling of its source material. Instead, it features a real-life take on the iconic video game franchise.

Live-action anime adaptations aren’t new as there have been many movies and shows throughout the years. Most of them aren’t that great though, at least if you ask fans.

Recently, there seems to have been a shift in attitude toward these adaptations.

This is thanks in large part to Netflix’s One Piece series, which has become a huge hit, both in terms of streaming numbers as well as reviews.

Now, more live-action adaptations are coming soon, one of which is for the ever-popular Pokemon franchise. Specifically, this live-action series is inspired by the original Pokemon Red game.

Technically, this is not the first live-action adaptation in the franchise as the Detective Pikachu movie came out a few years ago. But this is the first live-action adaptation to come from Japan.

It’s also unique as its story is not a recreation of the Pokemon Red story. Instead, it is set in the real world and follows a young woman named Madoka Akagi who used to play Pokemon back when she was a kid.

In the series, Madoka dreams of becoming a creator in a creative agency, though she finds it challenging to do so. Soon, she tries to play Pokemon Red again.

The show’s new trailer was shared on the series’ official X (formerly Twitter) account. It gives fans a look at the main character along with the other supporting cast members.

Plus, it shows Madoka booting up Pokemon Red again, complete with a nice blow of the cartridge (which pretty much every Game Boy player has done at one point). Check out the new trailer here:

The show’s main cast consists of actors that anime fans are likely unfamiliar with, though it does star Aya Hirano, an iconic VA who is best known as the voice of Haruhi Suzumiya.

The live-action Pokemon series will premiere in Japan on October 19, 2023. For now, there’s no word on English release plans.
