The DC Extended Universe is undeniably in shambles right now with the franchise's most recent offerings like Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash bombing at the box office.

However, there was a time when the DCEU showed tremendous promise with 2018's Aquaman becoming both a critical and financial success. Unfortunately, a lot of fans have lost enthusiasm for its sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and it's mainly due to Amber Heard's controversies.

When her issues with ex-husband Johnny Depp made headlines shortly after the 2018 film's release, fans quickly turned on the actress and they've been hell-bent on her getting reprimanded.

Lucky for the 37-year-old star, it looks like the entire movement isn't going to succeed.

As of writing, the Change.org petition titled "Remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2" is still going strong with a whopping 4.6 million signatures. The movement which was launched in 2019 gained widespread traction during the height of the Depp-Heard defamation saga.

However, as astonishing as the petition is, it's already safe to say that the fans' clamor won't affect Heard's position in the upcoming Aquaman sequel so the entire campaign is utterly pointless.

In fact, Mera is still scheduled to appear in the film and even Amber spoke about her experience in a recent interview.

Speaking with Deadline, Amber said: "'Aquaman,' that franchise and the machinery behind it, I’m very honored, honored to be a part of that."

Mera's status in the new DC Universe is a completely different story though. With the way things are going, there's definitely a strong chance that Amber won't be part of the franchise reboot despite rumors claiming Peter Safran is a huge supporter of the actress.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is slated for theatrical release on December 20, 2023.
