Zendaya's Michelle was pretty much a wild card in Spider-Man: Homecoming until it was revealed that she was the reimagined version of MJ. Nothing romantic happened between Michelle and Peter in the film, but some set photos from the sequel may hint at a budding romance.

We don't really know how Peter Parker finds himself outside of Queens in the film, but some guess that he's part of some kind of exchange student program. That would also make sense since Michelle would be with him in Prague.
Admittedly, some people took offense with Homecoming's version of MJ, deeming her not accurate to the comic; but it's possible that Michelle here is actually a red herring, and the ‘real' MJ exists somewhere in this universe. It's also possible that Peter ends up with Gwen Stacy first—seeing that she's rumored to appear in this movie.
Looking behind the scenes, though, I think Zendaya is too big a star to simply just be a side character in the Spider-Man films. It's possible that she really is the MJ to this version of Peter Parker, it's just a matter of waiting for the two characters to come together. Admittedly, the fans haven't seen a Spider-Man/MJ tandem since Spider-Man 3 back in 2007.
With Far from Home coming out in July next year, it may be a while before we get our first glimpse of the movie. Add to that, it's possible that the film's synopsis might reveal too much for Avengers 4. After all, Spider-Man is supposed to be dead in the MCU as of now.
