Peacemaker: James Gunn Reveals Marvel Helped on Making [SPOILERS] Cameo Happen

WARNING: This article contains spoilers about the first season finale of Peacemaker titled "It's Cow or Never."

The first season finale of Peacemaker is now upon us. While a lot of bonkers and crazy things happened per usual, one of the main (if not the main) highlights of the episode is the cameo appearance of the Justice League, particularly Jason Momoa's Aquaman and Ezra Miller's The Flash. Of course, a lot of fans were happy with their appearances even if it was just a few seconds. As it turns out, Marvel has something to do with the filming of their cameo.

Speaking with Deadline, Peacemaker writer and director James Gunn was asked about how he landed Momoa and Miller to do a cameo appearance in the episode in which he explained, "Jason, I have known for a while. So, we had a preexisting relationship, and also Peter Safran, who’s the producer on the show and he’s one of my closest allies and friends, he’s friends with Jason because he produces the Aquaman movies. So, we asked Jason. We knew Jason was probably going to do it very early on. Ezra came in as more of a surprise. I found out through a couple of friends that Ezra liked my films, and so then I connected with him and asked him to do it, as well. So, yeah, we were just lucky with the two of them."

Gunn also discussed how the two actors were game to poke fun at their respective characters and revealed that Miller had a lot of outtakes when they were filming their scene. "You hear Aquaman just cursing. I think both of those guys deserves total props because he does f*** with both of them the whole season, and so the fact that they have such a great sense of humor about themselves, I really appreciate both those guys and what they did," he said. "The Ezra outtakes are probably the greatest things I’ve ever had. He literally went on for 30 minutes, and he hadn’t seen the show. I just showed him the scene of them walking away, and he kept calling [Emilia] Harcourt the little blonde boy. The best outtakes of all time are from him."

When the interviewer suggested that HBO Max should put the outtakes, that is when Gunn revealed that a Marvel crew actually filmed the scene. "It was nice because we shot it on the set and with the crew of Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3," he said. "You know, they were kind of paying us back, though, because DC, Chukwudi Iwuji, we used the Peacemaker crew to shoot Chukwudi’s screen test for Guardians 3, and DC was really cool about that, and then Marvel was really cool about letting us use our crew to shoot Ezra."

It is interesting to hear that a Marvel film crew actually shot that glorious cameo scene in the episode. Of course, we know that Gunn is working on both Marvel and DC properties so it's not surprising that this circumstance happened. Perhaps the actors were only available during the time when Gunn was already in production for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which is why it happened. Either way, it is awesome to know that the collaboration between DC and Marvel made the cameo appearance possible.

What also stood out with Gunn's story is how Momoa and Miller were game to do their cameo appearance even though it might appear to be silly and it is poking fun at them (particularly Aquaman). Gunn also basically confirmed that the show's main cast members didn't shoot the scene together with the two actors. However, he wasn't able to explain why they have Gal Gadot and Henry Cavill appear as well (safe speculation is that maybe there was a scheduling conflict). There was also no explanation regarding why Batman and Cyborg were not in the scene although perhaps that might be a story that they will tell in another time. Despite that, it's still great to see Momoa and Miller show up as it certainly brought a huge smile to the viewers.
