Outer Banks Fans Think John B.'s Nickname Has A Connection to A State's History

While fans are waiting for Outer Banks Season 3 to come out on Netflix, some of them have been discussing John B's (Chase Stokes) name. Many fans think the Outer Banks character's nickname serves as a differentiator between him and his father, "Big John" Routledge. Now, a fan shared another theory that shows a historical connection to John B.'s name.

Filming for Outer Banks Season 3 already started in South Carolina, and its production is expected to continue until August 2022. Fans recently started various conversations about the show on Reddit, and one fan explained how John B's might have a historical connection.

“John Rutledge was one of the South Carolina state representatives when the constitution was made,” said Redditor Sambrero3. “The Outer Banks show was filmed in South Carolina.” The spelling of the last name differs from John B.’s in the Netflix series, but most fans still found the observation interesting.

“Cool find, lame of them to use a person from [South Carolina] when it’s a show about [North Carolina],” another Reddit user wrote. Showrunners decided to move the filming location of Outer Banks to South Carolina mostly for legal reasons.

In the pilot episode of Outer Banks, John B. refers to himself as John Booker Routledge. His full name wasn't mentioned again, which made it harder for fans to miss the middle name drop. But his middle initial is used as a nickname throughout the first two seasons of the Netflix teen mystery drama.

Fans have been wondering why John B. needs to differentiate himself with the nickname. Why would he keep the "B" if there's one else in the series named "John".

As Refinery29 explained, the "B" is likely what John B. uses to differentiate himself from his father. It's likely that the people of the Outer Banks referred to him as John B., from a young age and the nickname stuck.

Other fans of the Netflix series think John B.'s name was inspired by the folk song Sloop John B., a song by the Beach Boys. “His name is from the folk song ‘Sloop John B.’,” another commenter wrote. “A version of the song was played in the show.”
