Fans will once again see Orphan Black back to life with Krysten Ritter on the lead in the spinoff series Orphan Black: Echoes. But considering this show is way different from what the MCU star has done before, what makes her decide to be part of this sci-fi series?

Ritter has been known for her role as a tattoo artist and recovering drug addict Jane in Breaking Bad and as a superhero and private investigator in Jessica Jones. Clearly, these differ from her starring role in Orphan Black: Echoes, but she’s up for the challenge.

Krysten Ritter Discusses Her Orphan Black: Echoes Role

In an interview with Schön! Magazine, the 40-year-old actress revealed what made her decide to accept her Orphan Black: Echoes role.

"After Breaking Bad, I got a lot of junkies coming my way, after Don't Trust the B..., a lot of like party girls, and now, a lot of tough detectives," she said.

Seeing the same roles being offered to her seemed to make Ritter look for something new. Thankfully, the spinoff series came along.

“When this came around, I was very intrigued,” she continued. “In the first episode, I do so many things I've never done before that show a completely different side of myself.”

Though she loved her role as Jessica Jones, she saw the need to play something different in her career.

"I also appreciate that it's an existing franchise," she added. "There's so much TV; it's so hard to launch new shows, and this is a cool opportunity to do this next installation in the franchise.”

She described the spinoff as “wildly different” and hinted that there would be Easter eggs, though it would be “a completely new story.”

“But the first one was so good; it's a really interesting, cool world to walk into,” Ritter admitted.

Big Shoes to Fill

True enough, Ritter has big shoes to fill, following Tatiana Maslany’s portrayal of Sarah Manning in the original Orphan Black.

She earned three nominations as Lead Actress from Emmys, whining one, after playing several clone characters in the series.

Ritter will be playing the role of Lucy. According to AMC, she’s a “woman with an unimaginable origin story, trying to find her place in the world."

However, given the series' theme, it remains to b seen if that’s the only character she will play or more.

"Set in the near future, the new Orphan Black takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence,” the spinoff series’ plotline reads. “It follows a group of women as they weave their way into each other's lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unravelling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal."

Orphan Black: Echoes will be out sometime in 2023.
