The Ooku anime was released on Netflix just two months ago, but unbeknownst to many, it was preceded by a Japanese live-action adaptation. Soon, it was revealed that the Ooku: The Inner Chambers live-action show will get a Season 2 which will be released this October.

Along with the show’s second season, it was also announced that popular Japanese singer Aimer was also tapped for the show’s theme song.

As there has been one season’s worth of content already, Season 2 will adapt the manga’s later arcs.

There are many historical manga titles for lovers of traditional Japanese stories, but Ooku: The Inner Chambers is a rather unorthodox manga that has gotten lots of praise during its run.

The series is set in Edo period Japan, but with an alternate history twist as in the story, a mysterious disease with an 80% fatality rate ravaged Japan. But this disease only affected younger boys.

Because of this, the social order is flipped on its head as the male population significantly declines. This also means women have taken over the roles that men previously held.

Many anime fans outside Japan only became familiar with the show via the Netflix anime adaptation which was released in late June. This anime is made by Studio Deen and consists of 10 episodes.

Before the anime’s release, the original manga got a live-action drama adaptation which aired on NHK in Japan from January to March 2023.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first live-action adaptation of the manga. There was an older drama adaptation back in 2011, as well as a live-action film in 2010.

Recently, it was announced that the new season will air in Fall 23, and it will feature a new theme song by Aimer.

Most anime fans should be familiar with Aimer, or at least, her work should be known as she performed themes for hit series like Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, Demon Slayer, and Vinland Saga, among others.

This upcoming season will adapt the Cure and Bakumatsu Arcs, marking the first time that these two arcs will be adapted outside of the manga.

The live-action Ooku: The Inner Chambers Season 2 will be released in Japan on NHK on October 3, 2023.

As with most Japanese TV dramas, it’s likely that this series will not get an international streaming release.
