One Piece Decides to Break a Shonen Trope

One Piece is one of the most well-known shonen series out there and the fact that it isn't over yet shows just how much imagination series creator Eiichiro Oda has put into it. The manga and anime have over 500 chapters and episodes respectively, with the latter often struggling with filler. Despite being a shonen, the series has often broken some of the tropes that come with the genre and it did that in a big way recently.

In the most recent episode of the anime, Monkey D. Luffy struggled in a battle with Katakuri. During the fight, Luffy attempted to transform into his Fourth Gear state. Unfortunately, Katakuri saw this coming and stopped Luffy mid-transformation, before beating him up some more.

Considering how many anime tropes are out there, it can be rather surprising seeing them broken like this. The fact that the villain interrupted Luffy's transformation is shocking since confident antagonists usually let the heroes transform and vice-versa. Seems like Katakuri knew Luffy would beat him and didn't bother letting him change.

Admittedly, this isn't the first time this trope has been stopped. During the Tournament of Power arc in Dragon Ball Super, Android 17 (aka MVP) attacked and eliminated a competitor who was in the middle of a transformation. Goku actually chastised 17 for this since it was "unfair." Sorry Goku, but we'll side with 17 when it comes to that fight.

How Luffy recovers from this is going to be interesting. Logically, he could fight Katakuri while already in his Fourth Gear form. Since this is a shonen series, expect something else to lead to Katakuri's defeat.
