It has been a long wait but the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was finally released late last month. However, the show wasn't the original plan for the project, as it has been confirmed that Kenobi's story was initially set to be told in a film trilogy. However, Star Wars writer Stuart Beattie has revealed that the plan was ultimately altered because of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Anyone who has been following all these Star Wars rumors would know that there were initial plans for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. Those turned out to be true but Disney and Lucasfilm ultimately chose to turn it into a limited series that would air on Disney+.
So why change a great plan? Stuart Beattie, who wrote the screenplay for the Obi-Wan Kenobi film that was used in the show, told The Direct that the studios pulled the plug when Solo didn't turn into a box office hit.
"You know, unfortunately, it's just, it was Solo that changed the direction of the system. I like Solo, personally, but it hadn't made a lot of money," Beattie said. "It is crazy in some ways to think about it, how it [was directed by one] of the best filmmakers working today. But, just because it didn't hit a certain number, they just had to rethink."
Obi-Wan Kenobi may not have turned into a film trilogy but fans are still happy to revisit the Jedi Master's story in a more accessible way.
But what are the chances we'll be getting more episodes in the future? There are speculations that Disney and Lucasfilm are considering renewing the show for a second season. However, this has not yet been confirmed by the studio so it's best to take it with a grain of salt.
