Obi-Wan Kenobi Writer Addresses Grand Inquisitor's Shocking Death: "We Would Never Break Canon"

One of the shocking moments in the first three episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi is the death of the Grand Inquisitor at the end of the second episode which seemingly retcons the Star Wars canon given that the character was supposed to appear later on as depicted in Star Wars: Rebels. A lot of fans are wondering whether the character is actually dead or we haven't seen the last of him. Now, the main writer of the series has addressed this exact question.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Obi-Wan Kenobi writer Joby Harold was asked if the apparent death of the Grand Inquisitor at the end of the second episode broke canon to which he played coy by saying that they never intend to break the canon. "As you know, we would never break canon. So, that's all I'll say. [Laughs.] Canon is everything," he simply said.

When asked if fans should wait in the future episodes whether the moment was a retcon or misdirect, he played coy again by responding, "I can't speak to it beyond that. We all know where we're going in the show [from previous films and TV shows] so anytime you can undercut that, pull the rug on that, have a reversal..."

The Grand Inquisitor's death at the end of the second episode was truly shocking and confusing at the same time since we know that the character met his fate later on in Rebels. Of course, we still have three episodes left so we will be able to find out soon enough if we did see the character's death or if he will be resurrected and show up again for another major reveal.

There's also the fact that an actor in the caliber of Ruper Friend was cast to play the character and it doesn't seem right that they hired him to play the role in just a few scenes. With Harold's mysterious response, it looks like we might be expecting the return of the Grand Inquisitor somewhere in the second half of the season and perhaps have a key role in how the story will conclude.
