Nintendo Shocks the World with Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake

The first Nintendo Direct of 2019 was a smashing success, with many of us surprised that there was a bigger emphasis on new and original games, with only a few old ports coming to Switch this time around. Obviously, the biggest talking point of the show was a brand-new remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, which will come out sometime this year.

For those unaware, Link's Awakening was a 1993 Game Boy game that many consider as one of the franchise's best. Since The Legend of Zelda is a beloved gaming franchise at this point, knowing that a Game Boy game, which was also re-released on the Game Boy Color, is one of the series' best is saying a lot.

Link's Awakening did suffer a bit for constantly making Link change his equipment due to the Game Boy only having two buttons. Still, the setting and story were so intriguing that fans got used to this set-up, hence it's reputation. Now that it's coming out on a system like the Switch Link's Awakening can now overcome those problems and be the Zelda game fans always wanted it to be.

It seems like the remake will be using a similar gameplay engine to Link Between Worlds, a 3DS title that was technically a sequel to the SNES game A Link to the Past, though knowledge of that title isn't needed for enjoyment. This is a very good thing since Link Between Worlds is considered by many to be one of the finest 3DS games out there so seeing a new game with a similar engine should mean more improvements and innovative features.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is coming to the Switch in 2019.
