New Spyware Associated With Cyberpunk 2077 Causing More Headaches For CD Projekt

The Cyberpunk 2077 release has been fraught with headaches for CD Projekt. Players have complained about the bugs and glitches of the game, causing them to ask for refunds. Now, the game is facing another challenge due to spyware found in fake android downloads.

The game launch is very problematic causing Sony to announce that they are pulling out the game from their lineup and offered refunds. Moreover, in a recent company meeting, employees asked tough questions to the board regarding unrealistic deadlines and the failed launch. The problem for the game developer is not yet done as spyware threatens players who may be interested in getting the game.

Threat actors are taking advantage of the hype surrounding the game. The latest twist is ransomware that targets Android devices. It is disguised as a legitimate download of the game.

Tatyana Shishkova, a Kaspersky researcher, discovered the ransomware earlier this week. In a tweet, Shishkova described it as a type of CoderWare ransomware. According to her, the malware code is being promoted as a Cyberpunk 2077 download on the fake version of the Google Play mobile app marketplace.

The malware is listed as "Cyberpunk 2077 Mobile (Beta)" which also had reviews from "users" to appear legitimate. This leads people to think that it is the real game. Shishkova also included screenshots of the scam on Twitter.

If users click on the download link, then execute the binary, they will receive a message. The message informs them that they are infected with the CoderWare ransomware. The victim will be advised on the ransomware note to take a screenshot of the message, which has the information for decryption. The hackers will request the victims to pay $500 in Bitcoin, to be able to get the key and unlock decrypted files.

On a good note, CoderWare ransomware utilizes a hardcoded key which means that the victim does not necessarily have to pay for the ransom as it can be fixed. Even before the game was released, some unscrupulous individuals exploit its popularity by offering free copies of the game, while stealing the victims' personal information.

Beware of any platform offering a free copy of Cyberpunk 2077 to avoid falling victim to the scam.
