It has been nearly seven years now since the last proper TV anime in the franchise, and finally, a new Macross anime has been announced, and it will be made by the anime studio Sunrise.
The new Macross anime was announced recently during the Macross Delta Walküre FINAL LIVE TOUR 2023 ~Last Mission~ concert series. There, the new anime was confirmed, followed by an official announcement on the website.
While there are not a lot of details yet about the anime, this should be good news for classic anime fans, especially as Macross is a huge 80s anime icon.
Iconic 80s Anime Macross aka Robotech in the US
Macross is a Japanese mecha franchise that began in the 80s with the release of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross anime. Since then, the series has gotten numerous shows, manga, and even games.
In the US though, many older fans likely remember the series as Robotech. That’s because, in the US, Macross was adapted into the animated series Robotech, complete with edited content and dialogue.
While not an exact comparison, Robotech and Macross’ dynamic is akin to how Power Rangers shows are adapted from Japan’s Super Sentai series.
In the decades that followed, more TV anime, movies, and OVAs in the franchise were released, with the latest being Macross Delta, which aired from April to September 2016.
Delta featured many of the same hallmarks as the previous shows, including the mechs and the variable fighters, though it has a more vibrant and colorful style.

New Macross Anime Confirmed to Be in the Works
During the Macross Delta concert series’ last day, it was confirmed that Sunrise (the studio behind Mobile Suit Gundam) is beginning work on new anime for the franchise.
The announcement did not feature much in the way of details. But considering the nature of the reveal and the fact that it’s being made by a new studio possibly indicates that it will be a new story and not a Delta sequel.
If that is the case and it turns out to be a new series, then it will be the first TV anime in the franchise in seven years.
There have been Macross film releases recently, with a film being released in 2021, though it is a compilation of the Delta TV anime.
For now, there’s no word yet on when new details about the new project will be announced.
There’s also no word on whether it will be an anime series or a movie.
