New Gods Writer Calls Jack Kirby and Director Ava DuVernay 'Parallel Figures'

DC's upcoming New Gods movie has a lot of people pretty excited, especially since Mister Miracle and Batman writer Tom King will be scripting the feature-length film. As we wait for more details, King was recently interviewed by Publisher Weekly about the upcoming DC movie and he had a lot of interesting things to say. One fairly bold thing that the writer did was compare New Gods creator Jack Kirby to the film's director Ava DuVernay.

To be fair, King put up a compelling argument, bringing up how they have similar backgrounds and are in the entertainment industry. Some comic book fans might take umbrage with this since Jack Kirby has created a number of memorable characters, though Ava DuVernay is a talented director in her own right. Here's hoping that the movie lives up to our expectations.

"I feel like I have this genius, Jack Kirby, who created this [series] and this genius Ava DuVernay. I see them as parallel figures, both taking their uniquely American backgrounds and using them to push American art forward into places it's never been before. I feel like it's my job to bring those two geniuses together and to make it work."

As a big fan of Tom King (read Mister Miracle you guys) I'm very excited about this movie. This is obviously still very early in development but we're sure fans will go nuts when they introduce Apokalips, Darkseid, Mister Miracle, and so much more.

Currently, New Gods does not have a release date.
