New Details Reveal How Kevin Feige Stopped Sony from Making The Amazing Spider-Man 3

Sony was planning to make The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and a series of spin-off films including one that focuses on the Sinister Six. But after the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, plans were abandoned due to its disappointing box office results. A little later on, Spider-Man eventually got introduced in the MCU and he has been part of it ever since.

Per ComicBook.com, according to the book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and the other top executives went on an off-campus retreat to come up with a plan on how they can introduce Spider-Man in the MCU instead of continuing Sony's plan with the character.

The book said, "With no time to spare, Feige announced an 'all hands on deck' situation: Every executive producer at Marvel Studios had to be a part of a secret, two-day-long, off-site retreat, held in a rented hotel space in Santa Monica. No one else at Marvel Studios was told about what they were doing, just that it was a 'get-together.'"

It added, "In that closed room, two questions were posed: If there were an opportunity to broker some kind of deal with Sony, how would it work? And if they leveraged something like a five-picture deal, what stories would they want to tell?"

As we all know, in the end, Marvel Studios was able to get an agreement with Sony to use the character starting in Captain America: Civil War leading to the character's solo films and appearances in the Avengers films. The agreement still goes on up to this day with Spider-Man: No Way Home set to be released later this year.

This story basically showed that Feige and his colleagues were really determined to have one of Marvel's top characters be part of the franchise. After all, as they are evolving the franchise, it is hard to imagine having all the great Marvel characters and not having our friendly neighbor, who is one of the most beloved heroes in the Marvel comics.

Marvel Studios' idea of forming an agreement with Sony also came right at a perfect time when the latter was having problems with their franchise after the disappointing results of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. They were trying to figure out how to revitalize the character more and Marvel Studios was able to present an idea that proved them as the right team to do it.
