Marvel fans might have think that television newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan would be a great candidate for Marvel Studio's new Ms. Marvel series, however, the Why Never Have I Ever Netflix star doesn't think that it would be right for her to be cast as Khamala Khan.
Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Netflix actress was asked what she thought of fans hoping that she'd be cast as Khamala Khan in the Ms. Marvel series that Marvel is developing for Disney+.
While a lot of Marvel fans think that Ramakrishnan would make the perfect Ms. Marvel, the young actress doesn't want be cast as Khamala Khan saying that she would rather not take away the role from a Pakistani actress.
"I've seen a couple of posts about that, but honestly, no. Kamala Khan is Pakistani and I'm Tamil," the Canadian-Tamil actress explained during her discussion with the entertainment news outlet, "If there was a Tamil superhero, I wouldn't want to see a Pakistani girl playing [her]. I would say, 'Really? You couldn't find anybody who was Tamil?' So why would I want to do that to the Pakistani community? That wouldn't be fair."
Ramakrishnan would rather play a mutant character tied to Deadpool instead – partly because the Merc with a Mouth is being played Ryan Reynolds, who like the young actress, is of Canadian nationality.
"Trust me, I'd love to be a superhero. I love Marvel so much," the Netflix star said. "I could be the daughter of Deadpool or apprentice or something. Maybe Deadpool adopts a South Asian girl. It would make sense — Ryan Reynolds and I would both make the Canadian jokes."
While it's disappointing that Ramakrishnan refuses the idea of being cast as Ms. Marvel, the young actress does have a point – the role would be better suited for a Pakistani actress.
Ms. Marvel has yet to receive a release date but we'll update fans as soon as we get word.
