After announcing a slate of upcoming animated titles, Netflix revealed another interesting new anime that most didn’t expect. This new Netflix anime is based on the Time Patrol Bon manga by one of Doraemon’s creators.

The upcoming anime was revealed on the official Netflix Anime X (formerly Twitter) account and YouTube channel. There, a teaser trailer was released which shows off the eye-catching visuals by anime studio Bones.

Doraemon is a globally popular series, but this upcoming anime is based on the creator’s lesser-known manga from the late 70s to early 80s.

Fujiko Fujio is a manga creator duo consisting of Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko. Fujio is credited as the creator of the popular Doraemon manga, but the series’ authorship is a bit more complicated than it seems.

Fujimoto and Abiko have collaborated on various manga, though they also worked on several titles on their own. Confusingly, their solo projects are also credited under Fujiko Fujio.

The Doraemon manga is specifically made by Fujimoto. While Abiko is sometimes also credited as a co-creator, it is reported that Doraemon is solely Fujimoto’s work.

Another work made solely by Fujimoto is Time Patrol Bon, a manga that ran from 1978 to 1985. Fans of Doraemon outside Japan may not be entirely familiar with it given that it did not have a popular anime series.

It did get an anime special back in 1989 by studio Gallop (of Eyeshield 21 and Yu-Gi-Oh! fame), though this did not get widely released outside Japan.
