Following the huge success of the first season in 2021, Netflix is now expanding Squid Game into one of their big franchises as they are developing spinoffs, localized versions in other countries, and a reality show where people will undergo the challenges that were featured in the series.
The reality series, Squid Game: The Challenge, has been in the works for a while now as production started earlier this year in the UK although there were reports that it experienced production issues and complaints of medical issues from the players.
Now, we finally have the date for the highly-anticipated series as Netflix announced that Squid Game: The Challenge is officially set to premiere on the streamer this November 2023. It will consist of 10 episodes.
Just like in the main series, 456 players will compete to win $4.56 million, the largest cash prize in reality show history.
As they compete in a series of games that were featured in the series, the players will be pushed to their limits and forced to ask themselves just how far they’ll go to win, with opportunistic alliances, cutthroat strategies, and timely betrayals to follow.
So far, the streamer has not given out more details about the series and the players worldwide who are competing. We will definitely hear more updates in the coming months leading to the release.
This is exciting news for fans who are looking forward to seeing the series. While the idea was criticized at the beginning, there's still a lot of curiosity about what the reality show looks like with people playing it in real life.
As for the main series, the second season is still in the works with reports that production will begin later this year and potentially premiere by late 2024 or early 2025 at the most.
The first season of Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.
