It has been six years since the anime was announced, and finally, Netflix confirmed that the long-awaited Pluto anime will be released this October.

Along with the release date, the anime got a new trailer which featured more new scenes.

Also revealed were more cast members, as well as its official episode count, which is not the typical one-cour show that many were expecting.

Netflix revealed all of this during the platform’s Anime Expo 2023 panel which featured the show’s producer and Studio M2 founder, Masao Maruyama.

In 2017, an anime adaptation of the Pluto manga was announced. It may have taken a while, but a sneak peek was finally shown a few months ago.

Now, the main cast has also been announced, and it includes the following voice actors:

  • Shinshu Fuji (Risotto Nero in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind) as Gesicht
  • Hiroki Yasumoto (King in One-Punch Man) as Mont Blanc
  • Koichi Yamadera (Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop) as North No. 2
  • Hidenobu Kiuchi (Kenzo Tenma in Monster) as Brando
  • Rikiya Koyama (Kiritsugu Emiya in Fate/Zero) as Hercules
  • Mamoru Miyano (Light Yagami in Death Note) as Epsilon
  • Yoko Hikasa (Emi Yusa in The Devil Is a Part-Timer!) as Atom
  • Minori Suzuki (Liko in Pokemon Horizons) as Uran

Based on the manga source material’s length, many expected that the Pluto anime will be a two-cour series, or maybe even longer. Though Netflix revealed that this won’t be the case.

Instead, the anime will feature only eight episodes, but each episode will be one hour long.

This likely means each episode will cover one manga volume as the series has eight volumes in total.

Pluto is an iconic manga by Naoki Urasawa, the renowned manga artist behind works such as 20th Century Boys and Monster.

The Pluto manga was different from most of his works though as it’s based on Astro Boy.

Specifically, the series is a reimagining of The Greatest Robot on Earth, albeit with a murder mystery take on the more lighthearted original premise.

The Pluto anime is the first project by Studio M2, which was founded by Maruyama after he left MAPPA. It is also co-produced by Netflix.

Pluto will be streamed worldwide on Netflix on October 26, 2023.

As with many Netflix anime releases, it’s expected that all eight episodes will be released on the same day.
