After years in Development Hell, the Sandman adaptation is finally moving forward with Netflix. With the COVID-19 pandemic ongoing though, Neil Gaiman offers an update on the upcoming series.
Posting on his official Tumblr page, Gaiman posted:
It's going really well, except it's kind of hibernating right now until people start making TV again. The scripts for the first season are written, casting had started, directors hired, sets were being built. Everything was ready to go into production, and then we moved into a pause. As soon as the world is ready to make TV drama, Sandman will move smoothly back into being made. In the meantime, we are taking the opportunity to get the scripts as good as we can.
That should be good news to some fans who have been following the project for a while. It's taken years for a Sandman adaptation to happen, and now we have some scripts and casting is currently ongoing.
Originally, Sandman was set to have Joseph Gordon-Levitt play the part of Dream/Morpheus, and some fans are still hoping that he comes back to play the part. Then again, when I look at the comics, I'm now thinking that Timothee Chalamet would be a great choice for the pale God of Dreams.
Then again, maybe it's best to have Morpheus be played by multiple actors, depending on the story that's being told. I always loved the anthology format of Sandman, and it would be great if they could embrace that kind of mythos in the show. Cat Morpheus, anyone?

We don't have a release date for Netflix's Sandman yet, but if things get back to normal within the year, maybe we could get a premiere sometime in 2021.
