NCIS Season 20 officially ushers in a new era. One reason is that this will be the procedural's first full season without staple Mark Harmon (Leroy Jethro Gibbs), and fans will finally get to meet the new cast without hoping he'll show up again.

NCIS is bringing back another fan favorite for the premiere, introducing a new recurring cast member, and working a case alongside the team from NCIS: Hawai'i through a crossover to start off this new season and a new era!

NCIS Season 20 – A Complete Change

The absence of Harmon will not be the only alteration to NCIS Season 20. Instead of the team only investigating cases, executive producer Steven D. Binder told Parade that viewers would learn more about the agents' personal lives.

"We'll be seeing their non-work life a little more. I think one of the cores of the show is the cases. The show's called NCIS, it's about the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. But anyone who watches the show knows that it's really about the people on the show," Binder explained.

Hawai'i Crossover

Fans may remember that Special Agent Alden Parker (Gary Cole) was falsely accused of murder in the final episode of NCIS Season 19 involving his ex-wife, former FBI agent Vivian Kolchak (Teri Polo). The story will resume up just where it left off in Season 19 in the NCIS Season 20 premiere because she will return as a recurring character.

The Season 2 debut of NCIS: Hawai'i, a spinoff, will be included in the two-hour crossover event with the main show. However, this crossover will occur on the mainland as opposed to Hawaii, where the previous crossover took place with NCIS agents Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Lucy Knight (Katrina Law) travelling from DC.

NCIS Season 20 Welcomes Back Fan-Favorite Tobias Fornell

Joe Spano has appeared on NCIS as FBI agent Tobias Fornell since the show's inception. Fornell and Gibbs became close over time and relied on each other when they took risks.

However, just because Gibbs has retired to Alaska does not mean that fans will no longer be able to watch Fornell. He has long-standing relationships with team members such as Agent McGee (Sean Murray), Director Vance (Rocky Carroll), and Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen). Fornell is also acquainted with new squad commander Alden Parker (Gary Cole) from his time in the FBI.

Spano will reprise his role as Fornell in the NCIS Season 20 premiere, an episode titled "A Family Matter," as a reflection of his connection to the NCIS crew, according to a statement from CBS.

The crossover episode for NCIS Season 20 and NCIS: Hawai'i Season 2 debuts on CBS on Monday, Sept. 19.
