After only one season, Disney+ has decided not to renew National Treasure: Edge of History, the television series that expanded on the popular film franchise starring Nicolas Cage.

Despite having a promising cast and a deep reverence for the original movies, the show struggled to win over audiences.

National Treasure: Edge of History Plot and Cast

The show revolved around Lisette Olivera, played by Jess, a 22-year-old DREAMer who embarks on a dangerous journey to uncover the truth about her family and retrieve a lost treasure that was once linked to her deceased father.

Zuri Reed, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Jake Austin Walker, Lyndon Smith, and Catherine Zeta-Jones also starred in the show. The latter played the chief antagonist as an antiquities dealer searching for the same treasure.

Several National Treasure alumni made guest appearances in the first season, including Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha. The series was directed by Jon Turteltaub and written and produced by Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, with Jerry Bruckheimer serving as an executive producer.

The Fate of Disney+ Originals

Edge of History is not the only original series to be canceled by Disney+. The streamer has been cutting off many of its shows outside its two most popular canons, Marvel and Star Wars, after only one or two seasons, even if reviews were respectable.

Other shows that met the same fate as Edge of History include the John Stamos-led Basketball comedy Big Shot, Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Mysterious Benedict Society, Diary of A Future President, and Turner & Hooch.

Despite the respectable viewership of some of these shows, the decision to renew them was the reason for Disney's firing of Peter Rice.

National Treasure: Edge of History was an ambitious attempt to refresh the National Treasure franchise with a new cast and a brand-new mystery. While it did not live up to its potential and failed to win over audiences, it still offered a fresh take on the beloved franchise.

Although the show has been canceled, fans can still stream the first season on Disney+.
