Multiple Sources Claim Joker Sequel News is FALSE

The Hollywood Reporter had come out with a story today saying that Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix are developing a sequel to the smash hit Joker, but it looks like the report could be false.

According to Deadline, multiple sources have confirmed that Phillips has made no deals or any negotiations when it comes to a Joker sequel. What's more, he's said not to have pitched any ideas for other villain origin films for the DC Black label.

While it's likely that a Joker sequel could happen, it looks to be too early in the game for any talks or development. Having a sequel developed is also kind of contrary to what Phillips has been saying when he was making this first movie, in a sense that it's a one-off story that has a clear end.

If you ask me, they shouldn't make a Joker sequel, but rather a spinoff. Maybe they can put him in the same continuity as Robert Pattinson's Batman film. Maybe they can have him appear in some kind of multi-verse crossover. If anything, the origin of Phoenix's Joker is definitely interesting, but I can't imagine him coming face to face with a Batman; that is, unless, someone finds the right story treatment. For now, nothing about Arthur Fleck makes me believe he could be a criminal mastermind.

While this might come as a bummer for some fans, I'm sure the door isn't shut on the possibility yet. I guess we'll just have to wait for an official announcement from Phillips or Phoenix to know for sure.

Catch Joker in theaters today.
