MTG Senior Design Director on Whether Best-of-1 Matches is Considered For Competitive Tabletop Events

Wizards of the Coast

Ever since Magic: The Gathering Arena was released, players have been wondering if the digital game's best-of-one matches will make their way to tabletop events. Last week, Wizards of the Coast have sent an invitation to select Wizard Play Network stores to test out Quick Drafts just like the best-of-one drafts in Magic Arena. Now, fans are wondering if competitive REL Magic events will have best-of-one matches instead of best-of-three.

Thankfully, Senior Design Director Aaron Forsythe has clarified that there are currently no plans to use best-of-one matches at competitive REL tabletop events.

"The best-of-1 topic is complex and probably deserves an article, but I will clarify this right now: There is no desire anywhere to use Bo1 at competitive REL tabletop events. (I assume that's also true for Magic Online.)," Forsythe said.

While some players are relieved to hear that competitive REL events will still use best-of-3 matches, we're still wondering if the same holds true for competitive events coming for Magic Arena. Having quick best-of-one matches at small scale casual events would make sense if there's a demand for it but it would definitely be a far cry from replacing competitive and professional REL events.
