MTG Ravnica Allegiance's Dovin, Grand Arbiter Revealed

Wizards of the Coast

There's a new Magic: The Gathering set coming later this month, and today, Wizards of the Coast have revealed some Ravnica Allegiance cards to be excited about. In addition to the Shocklands, guildgates, lockets, and other cards spoiled today, Wizards of the Coast have also revealed a new Azorius Planeswalker: Dovin, Grand Arbiter. Check it out:

The new artwork illustrated by Kieran Yanner looks like Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy. The new Dovin's abilities look awful though. Compared to other recent blue Planeswalkers, Dovin, Grand Arbiter is a proactive card that relies on having multiple evasive creatures like the Thopter token it produces to get the most value and ultimate as early as possible but its ultimate looks weak for the amount of loyalty needed to activate it. It might become a strong sideboard staple in Standard or it could probably work in an artifact-heavy deck with Tezzeret and maybe Karn but I still this is one of the worst Planeswalkers they've released in recent years.

We know that Dovin has taken over the Azorius guild in the storyline. The Ravnica AllegiancePlaneswalker deck version of Dovin was already revealed. Hopefully, the new Kaya and Domri Rade cards won't be as disappointing as this one.

What do you think? Are you a fan of Dovin, Grand Arbiter?

Pre-release events for Ravnica Allegiance will take place on January 19, 2019; the set will officially be released on January 25.
