Ms. Marvel's Comic Origin Was Originally Going to Be Mutant

WARNING: This article contains spoilers about the events of the final episode of Ms. Marvel.

The final episode of Ms. Marvel gave us a huge revelation regarding the origins of Kamala Khan when Bruno told her that there are "mutations" in her genes. Not only does it make the MCU origin different from the comics where she is an Inhuman, but it is also the first time that the concept of "mutation" was officially acknowledged in the MCU which paves the way for the eventual introduction of the X-Men later on.

In a recent interview with Empire, Ms. Marvel executive producer and character co-creator Sana Amanat discussed the show's shocking revelation about the "mutant" DNA of Kamala to which she revealed that they originally intended for the character to be a mutant in the comics as well before they settled on her being an Inhuman.

"We've been talking about it for some time," Amanat said. "Here's a really important thing that people do not know – when we were thinking about the character of Kamala back, back, back in the day in 2012, 2013, when [G.] Willow [Wilson, comic book writer] and myself were ideating, we originally wanted to make her a mutant. That was the whole intention, to be able to do that."

When asked if the series' revelation on Kamala's "mutation" is a confirmation that the character is a mutant in the MCU, Amanat played coy with her response, "Is she a mutant, question mark? I don't know. I don't know, guys! All I know is that we use the word 'mutation', and that's all I can say."

Even though Amanat played coy on her answer, it seems obvious that they were establishing Kamala as a mutant since they played a riff of the infamous X-Men: The Animated Series theme song. It is an awesome reveal that certainly impacts the mythos of the MCU as we know it and it's curious to see what they'll do with that reveal in future projects.

It's also interesting to hear that Kamala was also originally going to be a mutant which would have been in alignment with what the MCU did. However, nevertheless, the way they set up the character by the end still works out and she became a beloved hero in the comics up to this day.
