Mortal Kombat Writer Discusses the Difficulties of Choosing Who Will Be in the Movie

The upcoming Mortal Kombat film has a ton of fans excited, thanks to the promise of an R rating and video game-accurate Fatalities. While we wait for more details, we do know that Sub-Zero has been cast and we're waiting for more characters to be announced. The sad thing about this is that we won't be able to see all the franchise's characters since a movie cast has to be manageable.

Screenwriter Greg Russo discussed this with ComicBook.com, noting how difficult it's going to be to choose characters for the film and finding a natural way to introduce them. After all, this isn't like the MCU where we can expect solo films for Scorpion and Raiden; they immediately have to do a group film, which is going to be hard.

"One of the trickiest things I think with adapting the properties are there are so many characters, right? I mean there are, I think there's 70 something characters in this, and we don't have the ability to stagger these films like the [Marvel Cinematic Universe] does, right? We can't do a Sonya movie and then do a Liu Kang movie. So we're forced right into Avengers mode off the bat."

Honestly, Russo used a great analogy since the MCU is what all Hollywood studios strive to be like. We'll have to wait and see if the Mortal Kombat film does well but if they see the format used in the recent NetherRealm games, they should be fine. Those games have some of the most cinematic story modes ever made and no one would mind if they took some notes.

No release date for Mortal Kombat has been announced. Mortal Kombat 11 is now available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
