More Magic: The Gathering Players Tours Cancelled Due to Coronavirus Pandemic

Due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic, Wizards of the Coast has announced that they're making several changes to the 2020 Partial Season of competitive play and additional event cancellations. Players Tour Series 2 events—Players Tour Prague May 29-31, Players Tour Seattle June 5-7, and Players Tour Asia-Pacific— have been cancelled.

"Given the current recommendations from government and health officials, and out of an abundance of caution for staff and player safety, running the necessary events for the 2020 Partial Season isn't possible," Wizards explained in the announcement posted on Magic's official esports website. "Unfortunately, the 2020 Partial Season is now unrecoverable, and we will start fresh again next season, beginning later this year."

Players currently at the Magic Pro League (MPL) or Rivals League will start the next season with the same status. New Rivals League players will also be invited from both tabletop and MTG Arena play from the 2020 Partial Season.

Wizards also said that all MPL and Rivals League players will be invited ot the October 22-25 Mythic Invitational Zendikar Rising. They are also inviting the current top 8 players in Player Points standings who already not a member of the MPL or Rivals League. The players are:

Joel Larsson

Yuta Takahashi

Brent Vos

Jacob Wilson

As for online tournaments, Wizards announced that any Any events, including the scheduled Players Tour Finals Minneapolis (July 10-12) and Mythic Invitational Core Set 2021 (July 23-26), will not be played for Player Points or Mythic Points, and therefore would not impact MPL or Rivals invitation for next season.

Wizards went on to recommend players not to make travel arrangements for Players Tour Finals Minneapolis (July 10-12) or Mythic Invitational Core Set 2021 (July 23-26) until more information is available.

Hopefully, the Coronavirus will be over soon, so we can go back to playing tabletop events in our local game stores, MagicFests, and other MTG tabletop tournaments instead of playing paper Magic remotely, like what many players are doing now.
