Morbius Director Believes Jared Leto's Living Vampire Can Overpower Doctor Strange

Now that Sony's new addition to its expanding slate of anti-heroes successfully premiered last week and grossed over $39 Million on its box office opening weekend, Morbius definitely has a bright future ahead in Sony's Spider-Verse. Though the film faced some discouraging reviews from critics prior to its theatrical release, Morbius continues to defy the negativity surrounding the film.

Morbius stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, a gifted scientist with a rare blood condition who accidentally infects himself with a form of vampirism, giving himself superhuman abilities but also a taste for human blood. Impressively, Morbius is a serious threat in the upcoming Spider-Verse if he goes face to face against Peter Parker. Morbius has genius-level intellect, superhuman strength, speed, senses, durability, flight, hypnotism, and accelerated healing. With that being said, Morbius is a new sinister anti-hero that might be Spider-Man's next big problem.

Now, looks like Morbius director Daniel Espinosa is a fan of the living vampire and the powers that it possesses. In a recent interview with Polygon, Espinosa revealed that Morbius is on the same level as MCU's Doctor Strange, as referenced from Marvel comics, “I love the moment where he sucks out the life energy of Doctor Strange," the director said. While he didn't specifically mention which issue, it's probably 1993’s Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #53, wherein Nightmare manipulated Doctor Strange and Morbius to brawl with each other.

Espinosa continued, "I just kept pounding that to all the executives, like, 'You don't get it. This guy has been on the verge of beating Doctor Strange! This is not a nobody.' And we don’t really know the ends of his powers."

The possibility of Morbius and Doctor Strange crossing paths again in the comics is very plausible, however for the live-action MCU and Sony adaptation, the odds of seeing the two together in one frame are less certain at this point. Morbius exists in Sony's Spiderman universe while Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is now the new anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Studios.

Crossing two cinematic universes remains an open concept for now, especially after Tom Hardy's Venom and Tom Holland's Spiderman have been seeding post-credit scenes that hint at a future crossover. Hardy's Venom was transported to Holland's MCU universe, and Morbius' post-credit scene also features Michael Keaton's MCU Spiderman: Homecoming character, Vulture, transported to Morbius’ Sony universe.

Now that the two cinematic universes appear to crossover in the future, who knows what might happen next? If ever we’re lucky, we might actually see Morbius go face to face with the sorcerer supreme.

Morbius is now showing in theaters worldwide.
