Moon Knight Was Originally Going to Feature Eternals Characters

Moon Knight has ended its run and it marked another accomplishment in the MCU. However, what struck out the most in the series is how isolated it is from the rest of the MCU as they didn't do a lot of references or connective tissues to the other films and TV shows in the franchise.

However, as it turns out, there are characters from a recent MCU film that almost appeared in the series.

During an interview with The Direct, Moon Knight head writer and executive producer Jeremy Slater revealed that there are characters from Eternals who almost appeared in the series during an earlier draft. However, they ended up scrapping the plans due to its "massively expensive" concept.

"I tried very hard to get the Eternals into the show, just because I’m buddies with Kumail Nanjiani...I want[ed] some Kingo," Slater said. "At one point, there was a flashback on the page that sort of showed one of Khonshu’s Avatars back in ancient Egypt, sort of dealing with Ammit being locked away, and Alexander the Great, and all of that stuff. You sort of saw this Avatar team-up with the Eternals. It was a really fun scene, but again, it was so massively expensive to recreate Ancient Egypt, to sort of bring in 3 or 4 of the Eternals to have this big action sequence."

He continued, "It was one of those things where it was a very fun scene, and it would have been a great cold open to one of the episodes, but it also would have had to come out of our budget somewhere else, and probably would have hurt our finale along the way. So, that was the cameo I had to cut. It hurt, but it was also the right thing to do for the show, and I think everyone sort of collectively agreed. There’s plenty of time in the future to team this guy up with other characters in the MCU and start building these connections; let's not force something just because the other shows have all had it."

It would have made sense if the Eternals showed up in a flashback sequence since they already existed in the universe a thousand years ago and it would have made the series have a connective tissue with the rest of the MCU. However, it is understandable that they have to scrap the plans due to the large scope which may have required a higher budget to execute.

While it might be unfortunate that they cut their cameo appearances, in retrospect, perhaps it works out for the best that they canceled the plans since it could have stolen the thunder from the titular hero and its minimal connection to the MCU made the series a more intimate and compelling character study about a hero that the audience hasn't met yet and, as Slater said, he could crossover with other MCU characters in the future.
