Modern Family Season 11 was the last time fans saw the Pritchett family before the sitcom officially ended. As fans believe there are more stories left to tell, it’s a puzzle to many as to why the series has been canceled.

Modern Family premiered in 2009, with the Pritchett family at the helm, followed by two subfamilies, Jay’s (Ed O’Neill) kids, Claire (Julie Bowen) and Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). From there, the next generation of Pritchett and Dunphy came, and the kids were all grown up.

So, why did Modern Family end after the 11th season?

The Continuous Success of Modern Family

Throughout its 11 seasons, the family’s clan grew with the addition of the spouses and kids—both adopted and biological.

Though the final season wasn’t as successful as its predecessors, the show remained a favorite.

When it ended, it consistently had high ratings, considered a rating performer for ABC amid the rise of streaming networks.

Hence, many wonder why Modern Family Season 12 never came to fruition.

The Signs of Modern Family’s Ending

Before officially announcing that Modern Family Season 11 would be the series’ final season, it became quite evident that the show was ending.

When it was renewed for a tenth season, co-creators and showrunners Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan revealed it would likely be the final installment.

Though it wasn’t formally announced, it had something to do with the ninth season’s negative reception.

Hence, Lloyd, Levitan, and the show’s writing staff tried to shake things up by adding more life-altering events to the tenth season.

Fortunately, Modern Family was back on track, and the review scores again shot high.

Modern Family Season Finale

The show’s writers and producers wanted to see where the show’s changes would go and decided to do another season.

ABC agreed, and Modern Family Season 11 was made, though it was quickly dubbed “the final season.”
