Moana Original Actress Reveals Whether She Will Reprise Role in Live-Action Remake

Last month, we learned that Disney is developing a live-action remake of their hit animated film Moana just only seven years after the original was released in theaters. Dwayne Johnson will co-produce the remake as well as reprise the role of Maui.

A lot of fans have been wondering whether Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original film, will also reprise her role in live-action. Now, we finally have the answer and it looks like that is out of the realm of possibility.

Cravalho took to Instagram (via The Direct) to address her involvement in the live-action remake of Moana where she revealed that she won't be reprising the titular role in live-action.

"Aloha Mai Kakou. As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, [a] live-action Moana is in the works and you all have been waiting very patiently for updates. So, I’ve written a few things down," she said.

"When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital [that] the cast accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell."

Fortunately, the original Moana actress will be involved in the live-action remake as an executive producer and will also help with the casting process of finding a young actress who will take on the role.

Cravalho continued, "So, as an executive producer of the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength."

"I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific people’s cultures and communities that helped inspire her story and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come. Mahalo."

While it might be disappointing that Cravalho won't be reprising the role, it is still great to hear that she will be involved in the live-action remake and make sure that the remake will do justice to the original.

There is also still the possibility that Cravalho might make a cameo appearance in the live-action remake just like Jodi Benson in the recent live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

For now, let's wait and see for more updates regarding the development of the live-action remake as it is still in early stages and might take a while before it comes to fruition.
