Amid Disney CEO Bob Iger and Dwayne Johnson announcing that a live adaptation of Moana is currently in development, screenwriter Jared Bush also confirmed that the Disney Plus show set to follow Moana is still very much happening.
Originally released in 2016, Moana’s big hit earning for Disney (scoring $682M worldwide, later on making its debut on Disney Plus) was later on followed by a confirmation that a Disney Plus sequel show was in the works, which was announced way back in 2020, initially in development while eyeing a 2024 release date.
With two Moana projects in the making, it looks like this won’t be the last time we’ve seen the main character from Motunui. Bush may have confirmed that both Moana’s live adaptation and sequel Disney Plus show are greenlit, but he has yet to reveal any information on what we can expect from the Moana series. It also remains to be seen if it is still slated to be released in 2024.

As for Moana’s live-action remake, the film will still feature the original characters, especially Auli’i Cravalho who voiced Moana and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as the voice behind Maui. As the world of Moana expands, it looks like we still have a long ride before we officially bid goodbye to these characters.

“I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavor, because there is no better world for us to honor the story of our people, our passion and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people.”
There are no official release dates yet for Moana’s live-action remake and sequel Disney Plus series. In the meantime, you can catch the original Moana film available to stream on Disney+.
