Midlife Crisis Will Be Thor's Main Conflict in Love and Thunder, According to Director

Thor: Love and Thunder is one of the many highly-anticipated films slated for this year. Impressively, Chris Hemsworth is the only hero from the original Avengers to get a fourth solo film, and in just two months, we will see the God of Thunder once again on the big screens.

Now that the long-awaited trailer of Thor: Love and Thunder has arrived, fans finally saw the God of Thunder return together, with the Thor-centric characters including Valkryie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) who is confirmed to debut as Lady Thor in the upcoming film. Alongside the major cast, Christian Bale is also set to join the MCU as the main antagonist for the film, playing the Marvel Comics’ terrifying villain, Gorr The Godbutcher. As a sinister villain is ahead of the God of Thunder, it turns out that Thor has to deal with an internal turmoil first.

In an interview with AP, Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi shares that Thor will be going through "a midlife crisis" in the blockbuster. While the director didn't dive deeper into the specifics, this comment means that the upcoming film will explore the Asgardian prince's internal battles.

“Thor is just trying to figure out his purpose, trying to figure out exactly who he is and why he’s a hero or whether he should be a hero. I guess you could call it a midlife crisis," Waititi said.

Thor remains one of the core characters in Marvel Studios, and the Asgardian evidently has an eventful adventure throughout the franchise. At the events of Infinity Saga, Thor joined the Guardians of The Galaxy, assembled a new hammer, sliced Thanos' head, and suffered from major depression after he realized that he couldn't undo the snap. Thor then officially retired as the ruler of Asgard and decided to relegate the position to Valkrie.

With how Thor: Love and Thunder is looking right now, it looks like it will be a more characterization of the fan-beloved God of Thunder. Hopefully, at the conclusion of the film, Thor would go through this Midlife Crisis and become the mighty Avenger again.

Thor: Love and Thunder will premiere in theaters on July 8, 2022.
