Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek Spinoff Receives Promising Update

Michelle Yeoh debuted in the Star Trek universe as Captain Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery, which was co-created by franchise producer Alex Kurtzman alongside Bryan Fuller. While it’s been a long while since we last received updates on whether Yeoh’s Star Trek spinoff series, Section 31, is happening or not, Kurtzman lays out what he knows as of now.

“I can’t,” he responded during a recent interview with SFX Magazine, when he was asked whether he could open up their plans for Kate Mulgrew’s Admiral Kathryn Janeway, “But yet, what I can tell you is we do have plans…”

Followed up with a question if those current “plans” have anything to do with Janeway, specifically, Kurtzman said, “No, we have plans for new things. I’m not speaking specifically about anything. But yes, there’s quite a few plans, and you’ll hear about them soon. We will continue to expand the Star Trek universe, absolutely.”

Kurtzman then continued on to say good news on Yeoh’s Section 31 spinoff: “I can tell you that we’re still very excited about Section 31. And that’s all I will say.”

Even though Yeoh’s role as Captain Georgiou had been initially killed off on Star Trek: Discovery, the Oscar-winning actress then returned to play Emperor Philippa Georgiou, the Starfleet captain’s Mirror-Universe counterpart. The Everything Everywhere star reprised her role as the Emperor throughout Season 3 back in 2020.

The Section 31 Star Trek spinoff plans were announced way back in 2019, where Yeoh would return to play the role of the Mirror counterpart, along with the return of Kurtzman as the executive producer, and with Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt tapped as its showrunners.

It is worth mentioning though that former Paramount exec Julie McNamara initially hinted that Yeoh’s spinoff and new upcoming Star Trek shows could not happen until the existing ones already mark their endings: “Some of these [series] can be considered as replacements as opposed to additions,” McNamara said back in 2019.

Nevertheless, while all Section 31 news had been particularly about “we are still in development” (February 2022) and that the series is “still in the works” (January 2023), only time will tell when the Star Trek spinoff could take flight across the streaming platforms.
