Michael J. Fox Gets Honest About Potential Back to the Future Reboot

Michael J. Fox became a huge movie star thanks to his lead performance as Marty McFly in the 1985 classic Back to the Future. It still remains to be a beloved film amongst the audience even up to this day and Fox has now been mostly identified with his role in the movie.

For the past several years, we've seen a huge trend in Hollywood where film and TV show properties from the past are being remade, rebooted, or given a legacy sequel treatment. However, the Back to the Future franchise remains untouched as there are still no plans to do another project based on it.

Speaking with Variety recently, Fox was asked about his thoughts on a potential Back to the Future reboot if ever Hollywood opts to do it and he responded by saying that he's actually at peace with the possibility.

"I’m not fanatical. Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already," he said.

Despite that, the Marty McFly actor still thinks that rebooting the movie is still not a good idea and doubts that it can happen and he believes that the film's creators will not be down with the idea as well.

"I don’t think it needs to be. I think Bob [Zemeckis] and Bob [Gale] have been really smart about that," Fox added.

"I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it."

Fox also shared that he was never approached to reprise the role in another project after he was done filming the third movie.

"I’m sure somebody thought about it. But I was in the early stages of Parkinson’s at that point, so I don’t know that I would have wanted to take that on," he said.

"Right after Part Three had done well, there might have been conversations about it, but I never got involved in them."

There is no argument that a reboot of Back to the Future would be a big challenge for someone who could potentially take the torch to do it and it would be very tough to match the original films as Fox said.

The only movement on the Back to the Future franchise recently is the musical adaptation of the film which has a successful run on West End and is set to premiere on Broadway this summer. Gale wrote the book for the musical version.

We can safely say at this point that we might not hear any news or updates regarding a potential Back to the Future reboot anytime soon since Zemeckis, who owns the final rights to the films, has also previously said that he will block all attempts to reboot the property.
